London Reviews: Ugly Dumpling Arrives in Carnaby – The Foodie ...

We’ve also had a cheese truck and Indian supper club set down permanent roots, most recently joined by a street trader famous for their Ugly Dumplings… Of course, there’s nothing ugly about either the fusion dumplings or the restaurant itself, which has opened on a quiet corner of Newburgh Street in Carnaby.

A rustic glass jar of flowers adds a gorgeous burst of colour against the makeshift bar and the kitschy coasters are so loveable, that we request the affable owner Philipp to take a few home with us.

A few of the other dumplings pale in comparison – their skin overly-chewy and the fillings lacking a similar boldness and depth of flavour.

The white chocolate and matcha dumplings on the other hand, are as good as they sound.

They’re closer to spring rolls in texture, with a devilishly deep-fried exterior giving way to a sharply-bittersweet green tea liquid laced with a milky white chocolate… It all makes for an indisputably uplifting afternoon, propelled in no small part by an easygoing ambience, the loveable touches and rather winsome background music.

While you’ll still find classic dumplings filled with traditional flavours like pork belly, aromatic duck, and satay chicken, they’ve gone off piste with their New Favourites section of the menu, where you’ll find combinations like mushroom truffle; lamb, harissa yoghurt; and courgette halloumi.

Just to mix things up, there’s a clutch of sides that don’t take dumpling form, like tempura aubergine drizzled with honey dressing; miso-glazed courgette avocado; beetroot noodle salad; and pickled watermelon with peanuts.

Then, just in case you were missing those dumplings, they’re back for dessert, fried or steamed with fillings like blueberry or white chocolate and matcha.

Would hate to be those other dumplings right now…   NOTE: Ugly Dumpling is now open – you can find out more at their website HERE.

Brought about Ping Wong, a chef already renowned for her street food and stint at Michelin star restaurant, Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, Ugly Dumpling's reputation sits on a fusion of Western/Eastern flavours that hope to: 'transform the humble dumpling from an Asian street snack into a new dining sensation'.

Sapid with flavour, not only did the mackerel ring of a neat and petite fish pie, the mushroom and truffle option had a rich flavour that all dumplings merit.

Shout out is also deservedly given to the sides, as Ugly Dumpling's tempura aubergine has a warming and simple flavour, while the beetroot noodle salad is something i've never seen before, fresh and dosed up with edamame.

I genuinely had the best night at Ugly Dumpling, trying blends of flavours i'd never had in those petite Asian parcels before, and learning that Ping's staff might just be some of the best in the business.

Ugly Dumpling (the permanent restaurant location) can be found in Carnaby at 1 Newburgh St, London W1F 7RB.

Set across two snug, blonde wood floors on the corner of Newburgh Street, Ugly Dumpling is just about cute and quirky enough to live up to that cute, quirky name.

Dumpling-dominated (obvs), the menu is roughly divided between ‘street food classics’ and ‘new favourites’.

The best of them, unexpectedly, was a ‘classic’ vegan spinach and tofu number.

New favourites were less impressive: salmon, lobster and tarragon confirmed my belief that you should never put salmon in a dumpling: it was unpleasantly rich.

Pudding was a low point – suffice to say there is nothing remotely cute about a deep-fried matcha and white chocolate dumpling.
